Writing A Wedding Speech? Here’s How To Do It Like A Pro

Whether you’re the best man, the maid of honor or a parent who was asked to say a few words throughout the reception, finding the right words to praise the happy couple is not easy. The challenge? Being able to write a wedding speech like a pro, so you don’t end up sweating buckets in front of everyone!

Here are some simple steps you can take to ensure that your speech is both enjoyable and memorable!

Open With An Icebreaker

There are lots of stories that you can pull from to start off your speech. One option is to talk about the couple’s relationship with each other and their journey toward getting married. What brought them together, what made them fall in love, and how you met them can provide some excellent anecdotes and create a sweet and nostalgic icebreaker to open your speech with.

Know What Topics To Avoid

There are some topics that you can’t talk about at a wedding, and you should make sure to avoid them in your speech. First, of course, is anything negative or political. And no matter how funny you might think they are, someone is bound to be offended if you try to share jokes about physical appearance, race or ethnicity, sexual orientation, or religion. Before including it in your speech, consider whether any topic would hurt anyone’s feelings.

Keep It Short and Sweet

Even if you’re a good public speaker, keeping people’s attention for more than 3 minutes is still difficult. If your speech runs longer than that, chances are most people will start to lose interest. Keep your speech as short and sweet as possible to ensure your loving words will be remembered by all for years to come!

Practice Makes Perfect

Practice delivering your speech aloud at least three times, preferably in front of a mirror. Not only will you be sure to notice any awkward-sounding phrases, but you’ll also be able to work out kinks. If you have time (and feel comfortable doing so), videotape yourself and critique your performance. You can also ask for help from a friend or relative who is willing to listen and provide constructive feedback.
